Death vs. Life

“To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” – Romans 8:6

I read these words from Romans this morning, and they inspired me to begin making two lists: a list of things that reflect “setting the mind on the flesh” and and a list of things that reflect “setting the mind on the Spirit.”

Here’s my first, quick attempt. (My personal list will be growing.)

Setting the mind on the flesh:
– thinking in terms of me, my, and mine;
– worrying about money;
– looking back on things that have happened (that bug me);
– dwelling on painful things (even – especially? – the news);
– wanting other people to help me;
– wanting things;

Setting the mind on the Spirit:
– thinking in terms of God and others;
– enjoying God’s provision;
– looking forward to what God can/will do;
– enjoying truly good things;
– helping other people;
– enjoying what is already present;

I’m sure I could go on and on (and I will, in my own space), but I am curious what kinds of things would be on these lists for you? Also, I wonder, do you agree (and what does it mean for you) that one list is “death”, while the other is “life and peace”? – Pastor Brad
