Easter Sunday 2021 Sermon: When the Sabbath Was Over

Which brings me to the modern Church…to today…and, more specifically…to First Christian Church, Grand Junction on THIS Easter Sunday of 2021.  Today is my last day to guide you as Senior Pastor.  You know this.  You’ve been preparing for it.  Your leadership has been preparing for it.  The Regional Office and Regional Minister have been assisting your leadership in preparing for it. But all the preparations in the world can’t change what’s going to happen tomorrow: you will enter into a transition space.

September 20, 2020 Sermon – Pursuing Change for Christ: Love

All this stuff, it sounds like it fits together pretty well.  But I wonder, does it sound like it’s consistent with the efforts being undertaken right now across our nation to pursue change?  If not, I would suggest there are far too many people pursuing change for something other than Christ, too many people pursuing change out of something other than love, too many people pursuing change that will result only in the continued in-breaking of the kingdom of people instead of the in-breaking of the kingdom of God.

September 6, 2020 Sermon – Pursuing Change for Christ: Reconciliation

My friends, God sent Jesus to reconcile with people – with US – while we were STILL sinners.  God’s way of reconciliation is for the party who has been harmed, who has been sinned against, the “victim” we would say, to make the first move of restoring relationship…not because it’s easy but because it’s the ONLY way to not just pursue but actually ACHIEVE real, lasting change, the kind of change that could be characterized as the kingdom of God.

We live in an amazing and critical time.  We live in a time in which so many people are open to change, so many people are pursuing change.  This amazing and critical time, it can lead to something wonderful or it can lead to something disastrous.  And we – WE in the Church, we who follow Jesus –  we KNOW what will determine the course of this change; we know what will make the difference between disaster and wonderful.  We KNOW the answer is love.

Advent Change: Sing for Joy

But, if we want the benefits of singing for joy ALL…THE…TIME, we’ve got to figure out ways to sing for joy throughout the year. So…we can, we should, take the momentum of the Christmas season and carry it forward by establishing regular patterns that will help us sing for joy as God intends…and live the most abundant, contented, lives possible.

Advent Change: Forgive

And…one of the greatest changes represented in Jesus was God’s forgiveness of sins…as well as God’s revelation that the best way for us to live is to forgive the real and perceived trespasses of others…to forgive not for their sake alone but also, maybe especially, for the sake of ourselves.
