First Christian Church, Grand Junction – Praising God, Changing Lives!

Sermons from July 2016

God’s Party Calendar

I recommend that we, First Christian Church, add some CELEBRATING into our calendar. Celebrating is FUN. Celebrating is a reminder that God wants this Church thing to be more enjoyable than JUST a bunch of hard work. And celebrating provides for evangelistic opportunities. Our guiding scripture for this sermon series, Acts 2:42-47, describes the very first Church in what sound to me a lot like partying terms, and, the description ends with the words, “And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.” It sounds to me like coming together to have some fun and enjoyment might actually be attractive to people outside the Church. What we do here can’t be ALL partying, for sure, but it should include at least SOME partying.

Expecting to See Jesus

Y’all, I believe at the core of my being that what searchers and seekers are wanting when they visit us is to find a place full of people daring to believe that God is with us in this boat called life, a place full of people whose expectation that God will be present in amazing and miraculous ways today, tomorrow, and everyday thereafter is contagious, a place exuding not hope but TRUST and CONFIDENCE that God’s kingdom is near and so life is good and worthwhile, no matter how chaotic things look outside these walls.

Hospitality

Y’all, there are thousands of lost and lonely people, hungry people like Marta, all around us in the Grand Valley. Once we’ve invited them to Jesus’ house, we need to do everything we can to help them encounter Jesus while they’re here. Even if it means spending some money on big arrow signs pointing to the entrance that WE don’t NEED for uUS instead of spending that same money on a new convenience WE will use. Even if it means focusing on THEIR children instead of ourselves. Even if it means there will be a few buletin airplanes flying around.

Changing Lives

Y’all, there ARE hungry people all around…even now. There are people who need a changed life. Maybe we can’t miraculously heal people or resurrect people the way Jesus could. But we can TALK with them and in conversation with them help them experience the amazing power of Jesus. It’s time to bring those hungry people in. It’s time to talk to people about your encounters with Jesus, about what you encounter here at First Christian Church, Grand Junction. It’s time to expect that when you start that conversation, it will be a conversation that will change someone’s life.
