Sermons on Acts

Full of Grace and Power

Y’all, the risen Christ stands before you this Easter season offering grace and power, wonders and signs. These things may come with a cost because what it takes to achieve them is NOT what those who live in the kingdom of this world want, but the risen Christ stands before you, offering them. It’s up to YOU, it’s up to US, whether we’ll take what Christ offers or what someone else offers.

The Importance of a Converted Community

Because, here’s the thing, if we’re not living as a converted community, as a community converted in this trinity of relationships by our encounter with God through Christ and the Holy Spirit, what do we have to offer people that they can’t get anywhere else in our society? What would compel them to become a part of what God is doing here? Alternatively, if and WHEN we are living as a converted community, God’s Spirit will work through is to bring in a harvest beyond our wildest imagination.

The Paul Problem

So my message to you today is this: don’t get caught up in thinking you’ve got to have some amazing conversion story in order to have something to tell. All you need is an awareness that Jesus makes a difference in your life, that God makes a difference in your life, that Church makes a difference in your life.

What Does This Mean?

A little less than 2,000 years ago, something amazing, something world changing happened. God made a decision to put the power to change the world in the hands of Jesus’ followers. God made a decision to put the power to change the world and achieve God’s great desires for the world into the hands of US. That’s “what this means.” What are we going to do about it?

How to Share the Gospel

Y’all, this FAITH thing, it MATTERS to you…or you wouldn’t be doing it. This love of God thing, it TOUCHES you somehow in a way that nothing else in the world can. If it didn’t, you simply wouldn’t be here. And I have a hard time believing that you wouldn’t want the same thing for other people. Because you follow a man who loved everyone. Because you worship a God who loves everyone. And you’ve received from God a desire for the best for others, as well.

Wait

Y’all, God’s vision for First Christian Church, Grand Junction is an Easter vision. It is new life, life practiced and experienced differently from the ways of the world all around us. Life practiced in a way that might seem like foolishness to the ways of the world. But, like the disciples and their vision of a Holy Spirit poured out upon them, we must wait for this vision to be realized in God’s time, not our time. So we must wait. But let us not get discouraged in the waiting. Instead, let us wait actively, doing everything God asks and requires of us in this time. And let us enjoy the present moment in which we live, instead of pining for a future moment. God offers plenty of reward, right here, right now. And let’s trust in God that God’s great vision will take place at the appropriate time.
