Worship at the Cabin: Creation Care

I said it before; I’ll say it again.  I’m not an environmentalist. You will not anytime soon be hearing me advocating any kind of mandatory restrictions on people’s enjoyment of God’s creation.  However, what you’ve heard today and what you will CONTINUE to here is a person of God imploring you to CHOOSE to perform one of the primary jobs God placed people here to perform: caring for God’s creation the way God would care for it, the way God showed us throughout scripture to care for it.  Choose to participate in God’s desires and efforts to care for creation in such a way that creation can continue to care for people for generations to come.

Faith is a Relationship

In all of these ways, what happened between God and God’s people played out the way human relationships do. In all of these ways, what was going on WAS relationship. And y’all, that’s a big deal to know that the Bible describes a relationship between God and people. It’s a big deal to know that faith is a relationship

God’s Party Calendar

I recommend that we, First Christian Church, add some CELEBRATING into our calendar. Celebrating is FUN. Celebrating is a reminder that God wants this Church thing to be more enjoyable than JUST a bunch of hard work. And celebrating provides for evangelistic opportunities. Our guiding scripture for this sermon series, Acts 2:42-47, describes the very first Church in what sound to me a lot like partying terms, and, the description ends with the words, “And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.” It sounds to me like coming together to have some fun and enjoyment might actually be attractive to people outside the Church. What we do here can’t be ALL partying, for sure, but it should include at least SOME partying.

Expecting to See Jesus

Y’all, I believe at the core of my being that what searchers and seekers are wanting when they visit us is to find a place full of people daring to believe that God is with us in this boat called life, a place full of people whose expectation that God will be present in amazing and miraculous ways today, tomorrow, and everyday thereafter is contagious, a place exuding not hope but TRUST and CONFIDENCE that God’s kingdom is near and so life is good and worthwhile, no matter how chaotic things look outside these walls.

Enduring Faithfulness

I don’t know what you’ve been waiting for or if you feel that it’s too late for you to do something that will make a difference…but I would suggest to you that it’s NEVER too late in God’s long-term plan. Even if you’ve been on this planet 50 or 60 or 70 or 80 or 90+ years, there’s a way you can participate. And while you may not ever know how much of a difference you made once you decide to make a difference…God will know, people for generations to come will know.

The Fulfillment of Salvation History

Folks, Christ is risen. That fact might have confused and perplexed the followers of Jesus who first visited the empty tomb, but it shouldn’t have. It just FITS with everything that had come before, and I don’t just mean Jesus’ often confusing words. Christ is risen because resurrection, new life, real, true life, the kind of life that is TOV, is what God has always wanted for all of us, for YOU.
