Sermons on James

July 26, 2020 Sermon – Living the Christian Faith: Pray in All Circumstances

My friends, we could apply this concept to anything….ANYTHING.  That’s why James encourages us not just to pray without ceasing but to pray in ALL CIRCUMSTANCES.  Name a circumstance, any circumstance, and we can easily discuss and discover together how taking your feelings about that circumstance to God and asking to be persuaded by God regarding how to respond and how to proceed will lead to an INFINITELY BETTER outcome than choosing to respond on your own.  That’s what this is about.

July 5, 2020 Sermon – Living the Christian Faith: Whom to Trust

So…do me a favor, and for yourself go back in time…in your mind…like I did at the beginning of this sermon.  Go back in your personal history to a time when you incorrectly placed trust in a person or group who abused that trust.  Remember the outcome.  Remember your feelings, your emotions.  Remember the pain of the consequences.  And ask yourself:  when it comes to the big decisions of life, when it comes to decisions of Church, when it comes to decisions regarding the future of this nation…is THAT the kind of outcome you desire?  Or would you rather place your trust in Godly people who are sincere… and honest… and God focused …and seek the common good?  In this time and place, in whom would YOU rather trust?

June 28, 2020 Sermon – Living the Christian Faith: Tame the Tongue

A tiny bridle and bit can direct the actions of the mighty horse.  My friends, similarly, our decision – YOUR decision – to replace words of cursing with words of blessing can have a profound impact.  You might be just one person, no larger in comparison to society than a bridle and bit to a horse, but your intentional action of spreading blessing can absolutely, positively, CHANGE the direction of our society, of the Grand Valley around us.  All of us, First Christian Church, Grand Junction, making the same choice, can very likely alter the course of a nation at a time when our nation so desperately needs SOMEONE to step up and change the course from cursing to blessing.

June 21, 2020 Sermon – Living the Christian Faith: Live Impartially

When we start recognizing how much we allow outward circumstance to direct with whom we build relationships, and when we begin enough relationships with all different kinds of people to allow something ELSE – inward merits – direct the relationships we build, then, THEN we will be living out Jesus’ law of love that commands us to love ALL our neighbors, love all our neighbors as we love ourselves.

June 14, 2020 SERMON – Living the Christian Faith: Doers of the Word

I’m guessing there’s not a person here who desires a faith that is dead, a faith that isn’t real, a faith that is nothing more than deceiving the self.  Which means…you’ve got to act.  And which also means, the way to know your faith is to look at your actions.  Do your actions reflect a faith in Jesus, the Son of God, who gave his life for humanity?  Or do your actions reflect something else?
