Action

Y’all, a church building that had been reduced to rubble just a few years prior to that service now stood as a beacon of hope for a community and a testament to what faith-in-action can do. Which gets me wondering: what can God accomplish when and if WE, First Christian Church, Grand Junction, put our faith into greater action?

A Life of Trusting in God

While God’s followers will endure all kinds of crises, all kinds of calamities, God is also there with with them – with you – in the midst of a crisis. And God WILL provide a response, even if it’s no more than the response of God’s presence and comfort (which is actually quite a lot)…and will often be exactly what you need to get through. In whatever difficulties you encounter, I encourage you not to despair but to look for God’s response.

Faith is a Relationship

In all of these ways, what happened between God and God’s people played out the way human relationships do. In all of these ways, what was going on WAS relationship. And y’all, that’s a big deal to know that the Bible describes a relationship between God and people. It’s a big deal to know that faith is a relationship

God’s Party Calendar

I recommend that we, First Christian Church, add some CELEBRATING into our calendar. Celebrating is FUN. Celebrating is a reminder that God wants this Church thing to be more enjoyable than JUST a bunch of hard work. And celebrating provides for evangelistic opportunities. Our guiding scripture for this sermon series, Acts 2:42-47, describes the very first Church in what sound to me a lot like partying terms, and, the description ends with the words, “And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.” It sounds to me like coming together to have some fun and enjoyment might actually be attractive to people outside the Church. What we do here can’t be ALL partying, for sure, but it should include at least SOME partying.

Prayer is Essential

So please, as we work together as a congregation to share the gospel of God’s love and to grow in number and spirit, take some time to be sure you’re getting your direction about what work to do and how much work to do from God…so that you’ll be sowing the seeds GOD asks you to sow…and where GOD asks you to sow them. Then, THEN, God will take care of the harvest.

Hebrews: By Faith

The author of Hebrews knew – had seen it first-hand – what happens when faith becomes a head thing and even a heart thing but is not manifest by action. And so he ended his sermon with chapters 11 through 13, chapters that moved from talk about thinking and feeling to talk about DOING…out of faith.
