Journey to the Cross: The Great Party

Y’all one of the things Jesus made clear through His ministry and through parables like this one is that God’s amazing and eternal party is going to include a whole bunch of people who wouldn’t get let in if the decision was made by the religious leaders of this world…or, well, any person.  Because the criteria for “getting in” has nothing to do with the ways of this world but has everything to do with the ways of God.

Journey to the Cross: A Triumph of Grace

As one of the last teachings of His earthly ministry, Jesus told this seemingly absurd tale of a landowner who paid every worker the same – regardless of how long or how hard each worked.  And Jesus told us that God’s kingdom is like this. We all receive the same grace…which means none receive more or less than others…and THIS is what true fairness and justice looks like.

I Will Praise You in This Storm

Y’all, today is Thanksgiving Sunday. Wherever you are in the journey of life, I hope you’ve got some reasons to give thanks and praise to God. But even if you’ve got some things, some barriers, getting in the way of your giving thanks and praise to God, even if it’s still raining for you, I hope God’s message delivered to the exiled Judeans through the prophet Jeremiah gives you reason to give thanks and praise to God, even amidst the barriers. Because whatEVER difficulties you’re facing in life, God is there to face them with you and to give you comfort and strength in their midst. And whatEVER difficulties you’re facing in life, even if you’ve been facing them for a long time with no relief at all, God STILL has plans for you, “plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.”

Jacob Is Israel Is Us

I guess what I’m trying to say is this: don’t test God by expecting something quite as mind-blowing as changing a tumor from malignant to benign. And don’t wait for God to show you a stairway to heaven like God did for Jacob. Instead, watch for the ways God is with you in every moment of your journey of life, offering you again and again the gifts of grace, presence, and steadfast love. Don’t just watch for the ways God is working in your life, but ENJOY the ways God is working in your life. Because God IS working, and your recognition of that reality will make life a lot more worth living!
