Sermons on Life

Living Water

The reason to follow Jesus is because he is the life-giving water to life as God intended for it to be lived. The reason to seek God’s will with every action of your life is not to avoid punishment but to ENJOY life here on earth as it is in God’s eternal home. The reason to follow Jesus is because he offers life as the author of life intended for it to be lived…which HAS to be better than anything a mere created being can offer you.

That You May Live

Y’all, God didn’t provide the commandments – and God didn’t send the prophets…or Jesus – primarily to threaten us, to tell us what will happen if we mess up. No God has done everything God has been doing since the creation of humankind PRIMARILY for one reason, one reason stated very clearly through the prophet Amos, “that you may live.”

Rewritten

April 16, 2017 Sermon “Rewritten” Reading – Luke 24:1-12 24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in, they did not find the body.[a] […]

The Stick?

At first glance, Jesus story of the Rich Man and Lazarus might sound like a description of the afterlife. It might sound like a description of the afterlife intended to scare people with a big stick into living as God desires. But I don’t think that’s what it is at all. Rather, I think it’s Jesus’ attempt to teach people how to get the carrot, how to experience the great party offered here and for eternity. It’s Jesus way of yelling, “Choose God instead of choosing silver that turns to dross!”

Hope

Folks, we live in a time in which people are searching for hope. They can experience philosophical and political disagreements anywhere they go in our society. They can experience people selfishly demanding their own way anywhere else in society. They can experience stingy, exclusionary behavior anywhere else they go in society.
What they can’t get anywhere else, what they should be getting HERE, what they will flock here to receive, is the gospel of hope, the gospel of Jesus Christ, that reminds them that what they do MATTERS in the big picture.

Wait

Y’all, God’s vision for First Christian Church, Grand Junction is an Easter vision. It is new life, life practiced and experienced differently from the ways of the world all around us. Life practiced in a way that might seem like foolishness to the ways of the world. But, like the disciples and their vision of a Holy Spirit poured out upon them, we must wait for this vision to be realized in God’s time, not our time. So we must wait. But let us not get discouraged in the waiting. Instead, let us wait actively, doing everything God asks and requires of us in this time. And let us enjoy the present moment in which we live, instead of pining for a future moment. God offers plenty of reward, right here, right now. And let’s trust in God that God’s great vision will take place at the appropriate time.

But to Serve

Maybe I’m thinking too big. Maybe what Jesus wants is for us to stay in our houses of worship, talking to each other, and leaving everybody out there to fend for themselves. Maybe, but I don’t think so. Actually, I’m pretty sure those big dreams and visions I have about the way it could be – even just here, in Grand Junction – are more in line with what Jesus meant when he said:

Hebrews: From Dead Works to Living

The reality is, God gave you free choice. And you can keep choosing dead works all day long, all your life long, and God won’t stop you. But why? Why would you do that to yourself? Why would you keep closing the doors God opens…instead of walking through them with the choices of your life and enjoying the loving kindness and the amazing goodness of the One who gave you life and continues to show you the way to living?
