Sermons on Love

Changing the Rules

Which gets me wondering: how are we, FCCGJ, doing when it comes to seeing the rules of our faith through the lens of loving and helping other people? Do we spend more time telling other people what to believe and how to live or more time shining the light of our love in the their lives? Do we spend more resources on ourselves or on others? In other words, are we following the rules made by people, even US, to help us feel comfortable and good about what we have, or are we doing everything we can to follow God’s rules?

What About God?

As much as I like a good fish tale, I hope when you hear the name “Jonah” in the future or think of his story, your mind will wander to something more than fish, more than Jonah. I hope your mind will wander to a God who calls you to do sometimes surprising things (by human standards, anyway); a God who journeys with you, even when you try to run in the opposite direction; a God whose love is extraordinary…even when we’re least deserving of it.

They’ll Know We Are Christians

I don’t know about you, but I have a suspicion that if we start becoming known by the agape love we share with the world around us, if we start becoming known by agape love in the way we interact with one another and with EVERY other in the Grand Valley, the same kind of explosive growth that was characteristic of the first church as described in the book of Acts – great numbers being added to the Church each and every day – will be characteristic of the Church here in the Grand Valley of Colorado.

Love Your Neighbor

When I read Jesus’ greatest commandment, I hear Jesus saying we’re supposed to love God, we’re supposed to BE church, not exclusively or even mostly by gathering together for Sunday worship but MOSTLY but loving other people with actions that HELP them…the way Jesus spent his ministry loving people by helping them. So…First Christian Church, what can we do to love our neighbor?

The Power of Relationships

When we work to place relationships first over everything else – and by relationships I don’t mean just feeding off of others but offering to serve others in relationship with them – when we work to place relationships first over everything else, THEN, we will begin to experience the amazing power of relationships that God offered us from the beginning!
